CHAPTER 8

* * *

“I can’t believe this. Why is he taking him down to the station?” Bert complained as she and Carla climbed back into the car.

“It’s probably just a preliminary measure. Easier to talk at the station than the theater,” Carla offered, trying to keep her friend calm.

Bert knew part of the reason she was so angry was that she’d gotten caught poking her nose into the investigation. However, how could she not? Landon was such a timid guy and Tap had just jumped at the opportunity to finger him as the number one suspect. Wasn’t that the sort of thing the real killer might do?

At the very least, Landon deserved a warning that the police would be coming to question him, a lot of good it did. Bert had simply suspected Harry would be at the hospital longer.

Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, Bert became aware that she wasn’t thinking rationally.

“Sorry, I just was surprised to see Harry show up so fast.”

“Maybe he found footage of Landon in the hospital.”

“I’m not sure,” Bert admitted. “Or maybe, there was just no footage worth speaking of. Maybe half of the old security system is down while they prep for the new one?”

“It’s all just speculation, isn’t it?” Carla noted. It was ironic, really. Carla was probably the queen of speculation and wild theories when it came to these murder cases.

Bert refrained from pointing this out.

“I can’t help but feel Tap is involved somehow in this murder. Why else would he be so quick to point the finger?”

“It does seem odd,” Carla agreed. “How are we going to find out?”

Bert hummed quietly in thought. “You know, there is that brewery just two stores down from Pies and Pages.”

“You mean the one with all the summer camp themed drinks?” Carla asked, acting if she hardly knew anything about it. Bert had seen her friend go in there on multiple occasions, however.

“That’s right. The Burning Brewery.” She confirmed, ignoring Carla’s strange response about the place.

“Haven’t you eaten there?”

“Yes. It’s one of Harry’s favorite places to eat.”

“And you think that Chappy and Tap have some sort of connection with it?”

“I think that maybe they were there the morning of the accident? I mean, the brewery is known for staying open until dawn.” The place even had a drink called Until Dawn which Bert knew was yet another reference to some sort of summer camp themed movie. “Maybe that’s where they were hanging out and decided to pick a victim on the street out front?”

“Maybe, but it’s a long shot.”

Bert buckled up. “It’s the only shot we’ve got.”

The Burning Brewery always closed at five a.m. and didn’t reopen again until four p.m. the same day. Bert, however, parking in her usual spot outside her shop, hoped that the owner would maybe be in. She didn’t know him very well and wondered if he lived in the space above the brewery in the same way she lived in the apartment above the pie shop.
